After writing and producing local vocalists and musicians for many years in Milwaukee, WI and getting mixed reactions, I was still not achieving the results as I was hearing them in my head. I made the decision to record with artists outside of the metro area. On "The California Project" I had full control over writing the song lyrics, melodies and vocal/music arrangements. I oversaw the music, videos and executive production of this diverse eclectic nine song album. This is referred to as "The California Project" because the vocalists, musicians and studio team are all based out of Los Angeles, CA.
Washington, PA is geographically located about thirty miles south of Pittsburgh, PA, twenty two miles north of West Virginia, thirty plus miles east of Ohio and fondly known as "Little Washington". The nine tracks on WASHPA are my way of thanking Washington, PA for being that place in time where I was blessed with the gift of observation. Here learned to love and appreciate language and music to the extent I'm able to express myself through this medium. Washington. PA, you are at the core of my being. This area has been the major influence on how I perceive and navigate this terrain called life. It will be tattooed on my heart for eternity.
It is probably apparent by now if you have listened to any of the songs that I have written, that I have lived the life of an adventurous gypsy/nomad. In this way I have learned a lot about relationships with people moving in and out of my life. These songs are reflections on several of these relationships at different stages of their evolution. My emotional responses are reflected in the lyrics. Time has taught me you can't love someone else until you love yourself, and if you haven't found it you'll never stop looking for it. This three song EP includes "Smooth Jazz " genre specific love songs featuring original lyrics by Rod Washington. High quality vocal performances, fine instrumental backing and driving grooves are all tied together with an unmistakable rhythm and blues influence.
My religious/spiritual roots run deep in Washington, PA. My father's family was influential in John Wesley United Methodist Church receiving it's initial charter (celebrating 115 years of service to the community). I was a very devout member and placed the church at the center of my life during my formative years. In the song's lyrics, the story line is my way of paying homage to those who pray and have worshiped in this warm loving sanctuary. The High energy music production of "As We Walk in His Light" fits the lyric like a glove.
Jeff Taylor, owner of Fresh Coast Studios www.freshcoast.com was able to bake, restore, remix, and remaster the "It's My Time To Shine" recording project from two 1/2 inch 8-track reels. It has been an amazing experience spending quality time with someone who has total grasp of recording production, website design, video production, master musician on multiple instruments and one extraordinarily brilliant teacher.
In reproducing this project, we were able to bring several local musicians/vocalists into the studio. The newly added performances gave the overall project a more contemporary sound.
